StoryPrints privacy policy
Last updated: 15 October 2026
This policy explains how the StoryPrints apps handle your information. It covers StoryPrints for Android phones and tablets and StoryPrints for Windows (together "StoryPrints", "the app"). StoryPrints is published by MNK Consulting Limited ("we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 14076022).
In short: your photos and the stories you add stay on your own phone, tablet or computer. StoryPrints has no account or sign-in, does not upload your photos, and we do not collect, receive or sell any of your personal information. On Android, the optional "Scan a document" feature uses a Google component that sends Google some technical information about the app and device, described below. StoryPrints for Windows does not connect to the internet at all.
Your photos and descriptions
Everything you capture or import in StoryPrints is processed on your device. This includes finding the edges of photos, cropping and straightening them, and saving them. We have no servers that receive your photos, and StoryPrints does not send them over the internet.
Descriptions and dates you enter are written into each saved JPEG as standard photo metadata, so they travel with the image. If an imported photo already contains metadata, such as the date, the camera or the location where it was taken, StoryPrints keeps that metadata in the saved copy. If you share a saved photo, the people you share it with can read this metadata, as they can for any photo.
StoryPrints never changes the photos you open. Finished photos are always saved as new files, in the place you choose: on Android, your device's photo gallery or a folder you pick; on Windows, a folder you pick or the StoryPrints folder in your Pictures folder. Working copies are kept in the app's temporary storage on your device while you work. On Android they are removed by the system or when you uninstall the app; on Windows they are removed each time StoryPrints starts and when you uninstall it.
StoryPrints for Android
Permissions the app uses
- Camera: to photograph prints and album pages. The camera is only used while you are capturing.
- Saving to your gallery: to save finished photos where your other photo apps can see them.
- Photo location metadata: to keep the location already stored in a photo you import. StoryPrints does not use your device's location.
When you add existing photos, you choose them with Android's own file picker. StoryPrints can only open the photos you pick and cannot browse the rest of your library. If you choose a folder to save into, you pick it with Android's own folder picker, and StoryPrints can then use only that folder. StoryPrints remembers the folder so that it can save there next time; you can change it at any time.
The "Scan a document" feature (Google ML Kit)
"Scan a document" uses Google's ML Kit document scanner, provided through Google Play services on your device. The scanning itself happens on your device, and the images are not sent to Google. To run and improve the component, ML Kit sends Google limited technical information, such as:
- device information (for example manufacturer, model and Android version);
- the app's name and version;
- a per-installation identifier that is not used to identify you or your device;
- performance and error information, such as how long a scan took.
Google states that this information is encrypted in transit and is not shared with third parties. We do not receive it. You can avoid it by not using "Scan a document"; the rest of the app does not use ML Kit. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure and the Google Privacy Policy.
StoryPrints for Windows
- No internet connection: StoryPrints for Windows does not connect to the internet. It has no camera feature and does not use ML Kit or any other online service.
- Only what you choose: StoryPrints opens only the photos and folders you pick in Windows' own file and folder windows. It remembers the folders you have chosen, so that it can open them again next time.
- New files only: saved photos and PDFs are always new files; if a name is already taken, StoryPrints adds a number, such as "Photo (1).jpg". The only files StoryPrints ever replaces are its own: its slideshow and saved work files, and, when you carry on with saved work, a photo it saved earlier from that work that you have since changed in StoryPrints (and that nobody has changed outside StoryPrints). If you remove a photo from saved work after it was saved, StoryPrints offers to move the copy it saved to the Recycle Bin; the photos you added are never removed.
- Saved work: if you use "Save progress", StoryPrints keeps your work in the folder your photos are saved to, so you can carry on later: a file (its name ends in ".storyprints-work.json") with the session's photos, crops, descriptions and dates and the camera details of the photos you added (such as the date, the camera and, if the photo has it, where it was taken), and a folder of copies of the photos it works from. They stay until you delete them, from StoryPrints' home screen or in Windows. Anyone you share the folder with can see them.
- Slideshows: a slideshow is saved as a small file in the folder of photos you chose (its name ends in ".storyprints-show.json"). It holds the order of the photos, their timings and your caption choices (including how dates are shown), any caption words you write for a photo in the show, any shorter caption you write for a photo in the PDF, whether it starts again at the end, and the title page you write for the slideshow or PDF, with the photo you choose as its cover. Otherwise the captions are read from each photo's own description and date when the show plays; the photos themselves are not changed. Anyone you share the folder with can read this file.
- PDFs: a PDF of a slideshow is made on your computer and saved beside the photos. It contains the photos, their captions and any title page you wrote, so anyone you share it with can see them.
- iPhone (HEIC) photos: StoryPrints opens these with Windows' own HEIF and HEVC Video Extensions, which you install from the Microsoft Store. The conversion runs on your computer.
- Settings: a few settings, such as the zoom you set, the last folder you added photos from, your slideshow folders and the list of your saved work, are kept in StoryPrints' own storage on your computer.
What we do not do
- No accounts, sign-in or profiles.
- No analytics, advertising or tracking in the app.
- No crash reporting of our own.
- No selling or sharing of personal information.
Google Play
If you download StoryPrints from Google Play, Google handles the download and may collect information under its own privacy policy. Google may also share anonymous, aggregated statistics with us, such as numbers of installs and crash reports. These do not identify you.
Microsoft Store
If you download StoryPrints from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft handles the download, installation and updates and may collect information under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. Depending on your Windows diagnostic data settings, Microsoft may share with us statistics such as numbers of installs, and reports about crashes and freezes, such as which part of the app failed and the Windows version and type of device. These do not identify you. Very occasionally, for example when a crash happens on a computer that runs a preview ("Insider") version of Windows, a crash report can include a copy of what StoryPrints had in its memory at that moment, which might include part of a photo or description you were working on. We use these reports only to fix problems in the app.
Moving photos between your devices
If you copy photos between your phone and your computer, for example with a USB cable, OneDrive or Google Photos, that happens with your own devices and services, under their terms. StoryPrints is not involved and we do not see the photos.
Emailing us
If you email us for support, we use your email address and message only to reply to you. We keep the correspondence only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
Children
StoryPrints is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Your rights
Because we do not hold personal information from the app, there is usually nothing for us to access, correct or delete. Your photos are under your control on your device, and you can delete them at any time. If you have contacted us by email, you can ask for a copy of that correspondence or for it to be deleted. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will update this policy and the date at the top of this page.
